Fonkoze 2009 Social Performance Report

Helping clients climb out of poverty
Download 26 pages

This 2009 Social Performance Report analyzes data on Fonkoze’s institution-wide social performance.

Fonkoze works to fight rural poverty in Haiti by providing clients, mostly women, with access to financial and educational tools. The 2009 report is based on client interviews, focus group discussions, and exit interviews. The report states that:

  • 2009 was a critical year of stabilization and recovery for Fonkoze and its clients;
  • In 2008, natural disasters weakened the institution and its clients;
  • Fonkoze's strong response to the crisis set the stage for recovery in 2009;
  • Fonkoze slowed down growth of its primary loan product and focused on serving existing clients;
  • Simultaneously, it expanded credit and non-financial programs designed to broaden institutional reach, and succeeded in reaching out to a diverse range of clients.

Fonkoze has developed the Staircase out of Poverty approach, which is a series of four complementary programs and products designed to meet clients wherever they are and accompany them on their journey out of poverty. These programs and products are reinforced by other essential services such as education, health, and microinsurance
