Identifying challenges in the microfinance sector

This paper summarizes proceedings of the National Conference on Microfinance organized by the The College of Agricultural Banking, Reserve Bank of India, Pune and the Centre for Micro Finance at the Institute for Financial Management and Research in January 2009 at Pune, India.

The conference aimed to provide insights from on-the-ground research, and highlight policy implications. It identified challenges and emerging issues in the sector as well as areas for future research.

The conference showed that rigorous research can provide important insights for policy. It highlighted the:

  • Need to tailor products to meet people’s needs;
  • Need to facilitate dialogues and interaction between academics, microfinance practitioners, bankers, regulators and policy makers;
  • Importance of borrowing and availability of credit in business creation;
  • Importance of credit in helping households choose smarter investment than investment in temptation goods;
  • Responsibility of MFIs in creating and measuring impact;
  • Importance of financial literacy training;
  • Importance of rainfall insurance in encouraging farmers to explore costlier, but more efficient agricultural practices;
  • Importance of training with a peer in improving savings behavior;
  • Role of MFIs in developing supply chains and focusing holistically on livelihoods.

Identifying challenges in the microfinance sector

We have experienced here in East Africa that much emphasis is put on physical cash provision but in reality the challenge for micro business is poor management of the enterprises. No distinction is made between business and private matters and business succession is ignored and when business succession is done it is not based on merit.
