National Micro-finance Policy of Tanzania Framework for developing an efficient and effective microfinance sector The National Microfinance Policy (NMP) of Tanzania lays down the government’s policy on development of microfinance. The NMP recognizes that microfinance systems are an integral part of the financial sector that falls within the general framework of the government’s Financial Sector Reform Policy Statement of 1991. The overall objective of the NMP is to establish a basis for the evolution of an efficient and effective microfinance system in Tanzania that serves the low-income segment of society, and thereby contributes to economic growth and reduction of poverty. These policy objectives are to be met by establishment of a framework within which microfinance operations will develop, laying out principles that will guide operations of the system, serving as a guide for coordinated intervention by the respective participants in the system, and describing the roles of the implementing agencies and tools to be applied to facilitate development.
