Analyzing use of technology in microinsurance

This study aims to compile a list of information technology (IT) solutions that could be applicable in extending insurance services to low-income households.

The study included a market survey on technology for microinsurance. It also presents an information processing model and taxonomy of technology for microinsurance, and an assessment framework based on technology cost and sustainability. The report:

  • Identifies a number of representative technologies and positions them relative to each other, according to the information processing model;
  • Compares the possible solutions with respect to the different levels of microinsurance business process;
  • Classifies technologies according to their applicability, either to front office or back office operations;
  • Illustrates the use of the technologies through case studies.

Finally, the report makes recommendations and proposes an innovative approach to convert the IT infrastructure from a cost centre to a profit centre.
