Examining framework for organizations to measure and report performance

This document presents a user review of the social performance assessment tool (SPT), Global Reporting Initiative (GRI).

GRI is a tool that focuses on sustainability reporting. It sets out principles and indicators that organizations can use to measure and report their economic, environmental and social performance (SP). The user review reports that GRI:

Is a useful addition to an MFI’s reporting system;
Provides an MFI with a list of standard indicators and a manual that explains how to report them;
Is able to demonstrate that an MFI is working towards its social mission;
Allows an MFI to measure its performance against a globally recognized framework of SP indicators;
Is easy to implement for MFIs that have well-developed reporting systems;
Provides depth of analysis, validation and reporting in areas of gender approach, responsibility to staff, environmental responsibility and financial services.
Finally, GRI’s weaknesses include a lack of specific metrics for the microfinance sector such as depth and breadth of outreach, and its high cost of implementation.
