Sector Assessement and Identification Kilte Awlaelo Value chain analysis for safety net beneficiaries in Ethiopia This report details the results of a value chain analysis undertaken by Emerging Markets Group, Ltd. for several livelihood options offerd by Kilte Awlaelo/Wukro Wereda, Tigray, Ethiopia: beekeeping, dairy, vegetables (tomatoes), and shoats (sheep and goats).
Analysis was conducted to support a CGAP-Ford Foundation Graduation Pilot, implement by Relief Society of Tigray in Ethiopia. The pilot program combines safety net assistance with microfinance to help very poor people establish sustainable livelihood activities to graduate out of extreme poverty.
The report details how to incorporate sector assessment/selection and enterprise development components into the graduation model. This will facilitate identification of a viable market and plug pilot participants (and possibly non-participant community members) into the opportunities that a viable market presents, in order to expand participants' livelihood options; introduce activities relevant for landless people (including youth); and increase the value participants generate and return they receive for their efforts.
