Examining effects of training on members of self help groups

This study evaluates the effect of training in skill development and human capital, provided by facilitators of self help groups (SHGs). It seeks to understand if MFIs can teach entrepreneurship skills to borrowers, and whether it is worthwhile for MFIs to branch out into training.

The study examines data from five Indian states with SHGs, focusing on current members, non-members and newly enlisted members who have not yet received loans. Results suggest that:

  • Training does not impact assets, but can reverse the potentially negative effect of credit on income;
  • Training is more effective for asset accumulation in villages with better infrastructure;
  • In training delivery, the most effective linkage is when NGOs form groups and banks finance SHGs;
  • Training helps people move away from agricultural income to other sources of income;
  • Training provides technical knowledge and skills required for income-generating activities.

The study calls for an expansion of the bank-NGO type of linkage. Results also suggest that government officials should not be used as training organizers.
