How can MFIs integrate social goals into their organizational management?

This guide captures current knowledge and practice of social performance management (SPM) from a wide range of industry stakeholders, including MFIs, donors, investors, networks and support organizations. Written for MFIs committed to managing both social and financial objectives, the guide looks at how they can integrate social goals into organizational systems. It helps MFIs shape their performance management systems such that it helps them understand and respond to the realities of their clients’ lives.

SPM relates to how an organization aligns its strategic planning and operational systems to understanding client vulnerability and poverty. It has three components:

  • Setting clear social objectives and creating a deliberate strategy to achieve them;
  • Monitoring and assessing progress towards achieving social objectives;
  • Using social performance information to improve overall organizational performance.

The guide presents key lessons learnt about SPM. These include:

  • Clients are at the center of SPM;
  • Balanced performance management responds to clients’ vulnerability;
  • Use of information is at the heart of performance management.
