Strategies adapted by BlueOrchard for MFIs at different stages of growth

This presentation aims to highlight BlueOrchard's initiatives in Asia as an asset management organization. The company's mission is to promote social and economic development through microfinance by facilitating access to capital markets.

The presentation discusses different trends in microfinance institution (MFI) debt market, which are as follows:

  • The varied needs of MFIs at different stages;
  • The early entry and new initiatives of international commercial banks with microfinance networks;
  • Importance of local funding;
  • Recognition of public subsidized money as inefficient to support development of financial intermediaries.



The presentation elaborates on various adapted product offerings for MFIs at different stages:

  • Dexia-Microcredit Fund;
  • BlueOrchard Microfinance Securities I, LLC;
  • ResponsiAbility Global Microfinance Fund.



It highlights:

  • Restrictive regulations/legal issues and foreign exchange risks as some of the hurdles that BlueOrchard faced while acting as an asset management company.
  • The emergence of a new asset class with regards to 'microfinance debt for the commercial investor' and benefits to MFI due to capital investment.



The presentation concludes by making further suggestions and presenting the current strategy of BlueOrchard with MFIs which are at various stages of their growth and operation.
