A briefing series for practitioners produced by the SEEP Network

This SEEP Network initiative introduces the concept of social performance management to the microenterprise field. The brief is comprised of the following articles:

Introduction to Social Performance (SP) states that:

  • SP is the effective translation of an institution’s mission into practice in line with accepted social values that relate to:
    • Improving the lives of poor clients and their families;
    • Widening the range of opportunities for communities.
  • Focus on SP makes microfinance more customer-driven by monitoring performance against both social and financial goals;
  • SP is important to MFIs to check whether they are actually changing clients’ lives, to retain old clients and to add new ones.

Social Performance initiatives provides information about:

  • Number of SP initiatives that have emerged in the last five years;
  • Assessment, management, audit and rating of SP;
  • Difference between varying approaches;
  • Websites that provide additional information.

From the Field: Interview with Koenraad Verhagen discusses the Agridius Foundation’s interest in SP as well as what it would take to make SP management, assessment, reporting and rating common practice in the microfinance industry.

How SEEP is contributing provides information about SEEP's Social Performance Working Group.
