Uganda Martyrs University (UMU), based in Kamapala, was established in October 1993 offers distance-learning Diploma/Bachelors degree programmes in microfinance and community economic development. These courses are run by the Department of Micro Finance under the Faculty of Business Administration and Management in collaboration with other faculties of the university. The main funders for the program are Sida in conjunction with GTZ and MAIN. This training program provides a practical understanding of sustainable microfinance, and supplying the necessary tools to create and operate successful sustainable Microfinance lending programs in Africa.
This comprehensive course using both distance¬ learning and residential requirements satisfies the training and development needs for people already working in microfinance, as well as those seeking to explore this growing field. Students learn the basics of how microfinance works and see how MFIs can be of benefit to clients, particularly rural communities and small enterprise entrepreneurs.
