Rickshaw Bank is the flagship program of the Center for Rural Development (CRD), an NGO that works in the North East state of Assam in India. Initiated in 2004, the program is designed as a means of self-employment for the poor and the marginalized rickshaw community. Rickshaw Bank provides asset-based loans to rickshaw pullers for which installments are repayable on a daily basis for a duration of 18 months. Full and timely repayment leads to ownership of the rickshaw being handed over to the puller. CRD also works on mobilizing SHGs, particularly those involved with animal husbandry activities, and links them to financial institutions and banks for accessing credit.
