Unitus, an international nonprofit organization, fights global poverty by accelerating the growth of microfinance—small loans and other financial tools for self-empowerment—where it is needed most. Thier model focuses on seeking out and partnering with young, high-potential microfinance institutions (small banking organizations that serve the poor, often called MFIs), helping them build capacity, attract capital, and unite with our network to achieve rapid, sustainable growth.
In addition to its core nonprofit activities, Unitus works in partnership with other Unitus Strategic Affiliates. These are legally separate entities that are working to mobilize capital from private investors to support the rapid growth of microfinance institutions and other poverty-focused enterprises. Strategic Affiliates complement Unitus’s mission by working in developing countries where local financial markets are already ripe for microfinance. These enterprises work to create dynamic shifts in the financial markets, so that the poor are no longer sidelined and markets can work to reverse the cycle of poverty instead of perpetuating it.
