KfW Bankengruppe is a promotional bank under the ownership of the Federal Republic and the Länder (federal states). It finances investments in developing countries on behalf of the German Federal Government. They finance the investments in the future made by German citizens and SMEs to ensure that the German economy remains strong, as well investments in municipal and social infrastructure to advance structural change and the common welfare. They also finance projects of German and European companies as well as economic and social progress in developing and transition countries so that people have better lives.

Their mission is to continue being one of the world's leading and most experienced promotional banks, apply their expertise and strength to sustainably improve the economic, social and ecological conditions of people's lives. Its KfW Entwicklungsbank works on behalf of the German Government, helping to achieve the goals set for German Development Cooperation: to reduce poverty, protect the climate, ensure peace and make globalisation fair to help especially those people living in poor parts of the world to benefit. They finance water supply projects, sewage disposal and waste management projects, environmentally friendly transport concepts. In the financial sector they assist with building up micro finance institutions and offer advice to partner countries on bringing already developed financial markets into the international capital markets.
