The mission of Esperanza International is "to free children and their families from poverty through initiatives that generate income, education and health, restoring self-worth and dignity to those who have lost hope." The NGO's microcredit program encompasses the following components:
- Microcredit - loans averaging $150 are provided to start or expand the businesses;
- Business training - training in business planning, specific trade skills, marketing, budgeting, inventory management and accounting;
- Savings - Clients are required to put 2% of the balance on their loan into a savings account;
- Insurance - Clients can elect to purchase insurance in the event that they become incapable of working and are unable to repay the loan;
- Group-lending - Esperanza clients form solidarity groups of five entrepreneurs in a given community who receive loans. 80% of the organization's clients are women.
