Brigham Young University is the largest privately-owned, church-sponsored university in the United States. The university offers programs in accounting, business management, public management, information systems, organizational behavior and entrepreneurship. It also hosts the Economic Self Reliance (ESR) Center which serves as a clearinghouse of research, information, and connections on economic self-reliance. ESR's MicroFranchise Development Initiative works to develop, enhance, teach, consult, and publish research conducted by students, faculty and practitioners. The Center's activities include:

  • Clubs- BYU hosts various clubs around campus that promote international development, corporate social responsibility, and economic self-reliance.
  • Classes - Classes are offered that teach social entrepreneurship and other practices to promote economic self-reliance.
  • Economic Self-Reliance Conference - The ESR Conference is held every fall where participants can share research and network with like-minded people who are looking to facilitate economic self-reliance throughout the world.
  • Internships and Grants - The ESR Center has resources to help students find an internship or grant to assist in their studies.
  • Social Venture Competition - The ESR Center sponsors a social business plan competition called the Social Venture Competition. There is a $50,000 award for the top social venture ideas.
