Agence Française de Développement (AFD) is a bi-lateral development finance institution established in 1941 that works on behalf of the French government. Its mission is to finance development according to France’s Overseas Development Assistance policies. AFD’s activities are aimed at reducing poverty and inequalities, promoting sustainable economic growth, and protecting “Global Public Goods” of benefit to all humanity. As part of the fight against poverty strategy, AFD promotes greater access to financial services by supporting the emergence and consolidation of financially and institutionally sustainable microfinance institutions. AFD and its private sector affiliate Proparco use a wide range of financial instruments to support microfinance activities: grants, guarantees, loans in hard and local currency and equity.
