Credit Where Credit Is Due (CWCID) was founded in 1994 in response to the growing financial disenfranchisement of Upper Manhattan. In 1997, CWCID opened Neighborhood Trust Federal Credit Union. CWCID then dedicated itself to comprehensive financial counseling and education programs which are action-oriented, using credit union services to enable individuals to truly change their financial status.

In 2007, CWCID approved a new strategic plan to transform our organization into a citywide vehicle for wealth creation among low-income New Yorkers. Their goal is to capitalize on the strength of the community development credit union model to extend its reach to some of the city's poorest communities, and create a sustainable model for providing savings, credit and wealth-building opportunities.
