Helping MFIs develop a process for operational risk management

This Operational Risk Management course is one of the four courses in the Operational Management Curriculum.

This four-day course helps MFIs develop and improve the quality of their risk management processes, and focuses on problem prevention and early problem identification and control. The course provides participants with guidelines for establishing operational activities that assist an MFI to identify its vulnerabilities, design and implement controls and monitor the effectiveness of controls. Through exercises, group discussions and case studies, participants review concepts such as internal controls, fraud, and internal and external audit.

The course uses trainer instructions, overheads, handouts, case studies and reference materials to help participants learn about:

  • Key MFI risks, concepts and definitions of risk management, process of risk management and preventive, detective and corrective controls;
  • MFI mission and core values, barriers to institutionalizing values, role of people in risk management and key elements of risk management;
  • Risk management tools;
  • Business cycles, risks and internal controls;
  • Internal audit and its role in the internal control system;
  • External audit;
  • Corrective controls and their role in risk management.
