Introducing MFI managers to basics of accounting and financial statements

This course introduces MFI managers to the basics of accounting and creating commonly used financial statements like the balance sheet, income statement, and chart of accounts.

The course is based on the premise that MFIs have to be sustainable for long-term impact and that sound accounting is one of the pillars of financial health. Managers gain an understanding of accounting principles, methods and procedures through exercises, group activities and the accounting game Balancing Act.

The course uses trainer instructions, overheads, handouts, case studies and reference materials over ten sessions. It includes modules on:

  • Business planning;
  • Financial statements and portfolio report;
  • Recording transactions;
  • Summarizing entries;
  • Creating statements;
  • Interpreting statements;
  • Action planning.
