Training clients to use prepaid cards for drawing microcredit

This paper describes FINCA, Mexico’s experience in designing a training program for its clients to use its Cheque Inteligente prepaid card.

The prepaid card was a useful money management tool, enabling clients to withdraw money as needed. Knowledge gaps and adverse attitudes, however, prevented the successful uptake of the card. With help from USAID and Visa Inc., FINCA designed a training program to help its clients overcome these obstacles and take advantage of the card’s benefits. The training module included ATM transaction simulations and an explanation of card use at telecom outlets and point-of-sale terminals.

Training results were encouraging, with overall satisfaction rates among clients being high. FINCA suggests the following recommendations to other MFIs designing branchless banking training for low-income customers:

  • Focus on changing behaviors;
  • Start from the client’s point of view;
  • Explain benefits and costs of the innovation to clients;
  • Empower clients to make informed decisions about the card;
  • Make training practical, relevant and fun;
  • Teach by doing;
  • Repeat;
  • Integrate training into service delivery;
  • Solicit feedback.
