Analysis of the uniques challenges of MFI liquidations

Investor loss rates following MFI failures have generally far exceeded those in the traditional financial sector.  More often than not, microfinance investors find themselves walking away from an MFI collapse completely empty-handed.

Drawing on examples from all five continents and five in-depth cases studies based on interviews with MFI directors, managers, and creditors who dealt directly with an MFI liquidation, this paper analyses the uniques challenges of MFI liquidations, and provides recommendations to improve their outcomes.

The MFI liquidation case studies are:

WEEC, Kenya
SOMED, Uganda
FOCCAS, Uganda*
Bank Dagang Bali, Indonesia
ICICI Bank, India (Andhra Pradesh portfolio)
