On the Theory of Credit Co-operatives: Equity and Onlending in a Multi-tier System

How have credit co-operatives performed as financial service providers?

This paper is based on studies that looked into the effects of using financial co-operatives as conduits for channeling financial resources to the poor.

The study attempts to address:

  • Issues surrounding credit co-operatives in developing countries as a specific type of provider of financial services for poorer target groups;
  • Specific role of equity capital in a credit co- operative, in particular, the question of whether the shortage of equity is a major obstacle to the development of credit co- operatives;
  • Creation of a framework for an empirical investigation aimed at filling the knowledge gap of the factors that determine whether or not credit co-operatives are successful.
