Attitudes and Practices of Credit Union Members and Non-Members in Malawi and Grenada: Synthesis Report

What is the nature and extent of credit union involvement in MSE financing?

This paper presents techniques to help the worldwide credit union movement expand its financial services to micro-and small-scale enterprises (MSEs) in developing countries. It states that credit union expansion in developing countries will depend on identifying member and potential member attitudes towards credit unions, building on the positive perceptions and taking necessary steps to overcome the weaknesses. The paper recommends that credit unions should build on their strengths of being more friendly and courteous than banks, charging lower interests and service fees on loans, and providing relatively easy access to loans. They need to overcome the perception that they offer limited financial services, that they are not as safe as banks, and that it is difficult to withdraw savings from them.
