Who are the principal subjects of the microfinance sector in Mongolia?

Microfinance in Mongolia has just recently started to develop as tool for poverty eradication, asset accumulation and employment creation. The aim of this paper is to describe the development of the microfinance sector in Mongolia while looking forward at advantages and disadvantages of this new development strategy

More precisely, this paper:

• Provides contextual definitions of microfinance, microenterprise, microfinance institution and informal sector
• Describes the demand for microfinance services in Mongolia, the targeted clients and their requirements
• Outlines the main providers of microfinance services, ranging from informal lenders to commercial banks
• Analyses the legal and regulatory framework for microfinance, highlighting key areas for potential improvement

• Donor strategies for maximising return on investment and cost/benefit in their support of the micro- finance sub-sector
• Coordination and dialogue among the different subjects of the microfinance industry
