Why financial savings might be unattractive in Zimbabwe's current macroeconomic climate?
This article describes the experience of Self Help Development Foundation (SHDF), one of the oldest NGOs in Zimbabwe. SHDF has been carrying out a savings club which allows poor women to place their savings in one bank account held by the club.It examines:- Why women tend to save more in kind than in savings account
- The limits of the current savings stamps system compared to other types of financial savings
- The need for a new voluntary type of savings.
Although it considers that financial savings are unattractive in Zimbabwe's current macroeconomic environment and only commercial banks and cooperatives are allowed to collect savings, the paper highlights the need for a new savings product adapted to the needs and capacities of SHDF and its members.
