Savings products: A chance for microfinance institutions to increase returns?
This paper describes the different type of saving account that may be offered, and how each account may benefit the MFIs and their clients. It suggests:- how NGOs, converted banks and credit unions approach savings
- why MFIs and their clients are becoming more interested in savings products
- which risks must be managed by MFIs offering savings products
The paper concludes that if the different obstacles are managed well, savings mobilisation can provide MFIs with:- a more stable and cost-effective source of funding
- a chance to improve MFIs' reputation among their clientele
- potential increases in their returns
