What are the institutional arrangements for microfinance?
This paper states that lack of access to credit facilities has remained as a major handicap to the expansion and development of small and medium enterprises (SME) in Kenya. It also recognises the various constraints that have continued to stifle the growth of SMEs in Kenya. It looks at:- Demand for microfinance services;
- Microfinance services providers
- Key constraints to the provision of microfinance services
- supervision and regulation of microfinance services and;
- The way forward for supervision and regulation of MFIs in Kenya
Concludes that in Kenya, as in many other countries, approaches to the regulation of MFIs are complicated by the fact that many institutions are involved in providing microfinance services. Presents the approaches being considered in the on-going discussions between AMFI and Central Bank of Kenya as the way forward. It also reviews the role of credit and microfinance institutions (MFIs) in the alleviation of poverty. A number of institutions have been providing microfinance services to the informal sector and recently these institutions have faced a number of challenges including decline in funding levels, unsustainability and lack of supervisory and regulatory framework.
