Are savings services a necessary element of microfinance services?
A collection of papers and case studies on the successful mobilization of microsavings as part of microfinance services. The volume argues in favor of both savings and credit as crucial elements in financial intermediation. Microfinance institutions that mobilize savings are likely to have wider outreach and better governance structures, and can answer directly to their clients rather than to a long chain of government officials, development practitioners and donors. But savings operations require more sophisticated risk and liquidity management capabilities The first paper gives an overview of savings in the context of microfinance from the client, institutional, macroeconomic and donor perspective. Other paper topics include: - voluntary open access savings facilities in Bangladesh
- beyond basic credit and savings: developing new financial service products for the poor
- microsavings compared to other sources of funds
- comparative analysis of savings mobilization strategies
For empirical evidence, details of six case studies of financial institutions that mobilize microsavings in Thailand, Indonesia, Philippines, Colombia, Mali and Benin are presented.
